Rain, Rain Go Away

This week we learned about rain.  We read several non-fiction titles to learn fun facts about rain.  We  read The Rain Came Down and made a class book.  We learned about the water cycle and how rain evaporates to make clouds (condensation) then rains as precipitation.  Listen to our "Water Cycle" song.  We did an experiment showing the water cycle using water, shaving cream, and food coloring.  Check out the pictures!

We read The Mushroom in the Rain  and talked about setting, characters, beginning, middle, end of the story.  We compared it to another story we read in December, The Mitten.  Ask your child to tell you how they are the same and different.

The specialist teachers (music, gym, art) helped plan a special event for PME.  We will be participating in  "Summer Olympic" games.  Each class had to pick a country to represent.  Our class is the United States of America.  We kicked off this event with a special opening ceremony.  We got to march in a parade, hear information about upcoming events, and see a gymnastics demonstration.  I will keep you updated on any medals earned by our class!

Clouds are Floating

This week we continued our weather unit by focusing on clouds.  We read Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and made a class book.  We learned about the different kinds of clouds and made a flip book.  We read Little Cloud by Eric Carle and used shaving cream mixed with glue to make puffy cloud pictures.  See a few pictures below.

In math this week we worked on place value.  We practiced it all week using base ten blocks, gameboards, and number cards.  See if your child remembers the two important questions the banker should ask!  (If the number is 63 they ask, "Why do you need a 6?  Because there are 6 tens.  Why do you need a 3?  Because there are 3 ones.")  The game that came home has instructions and is a bit different than how we played at school.  Enjoy!

Tune in next week!  There will be information on our rainy weather and our April Visitor Day.

Hoppy Easter!

Spring is definitely here.  I am loving all the sunshine!  This week we started learning about spring weather.  We focused on wind by reading a couple fiction selections and some informational text.  We made connections when reading The Wind Blew by Pat Hutchins.  We listened to Whoosh Went the Wind and then wrote some windy poems using describing words.  Check out a few pictures below of each.

We had a short assembly this morning as a reward for earning over $9,000 for "Jump Rope for Heart"!  The students got to dress up Mr. Hager, Mr. Severson (the gym teachers), and Mr. Johnson (our principal).  Our very own Sydnee was one of the lucky few who got to help in the festivities.  She was a top earner for kindergarten.  She got to pick a friend to help.  Below are a few photos.
